Physical Activity and Nutrition

Obesity now rivals tobacco as the leading cause of preventable death and disease. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many diseases and chronic health conditions. The related cost to the U.S. health care system is estimated to be over $100 billion.

As increasing numbers of children and adults are identified as being overweight or obese, Central District Health has made it a priority to improve physical activity and nutrition in the Ada, Boise, Valley and Elmore counties by focusing on developing policies and making environmental changes to help people make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Our Goals

  1. Create opportunities for all residents to have access to affordable, healthy foods and safe, fun opportunities to be physically active where they live, work, play and pray.
  2. Encourage all community partners to consider how the work and the services they provide impacts the health of residents in their community.
  3. Work with community partners to assess current policies and practices that address healthy eating and physical activities, and develop plans to improve physical activity and nutrition for all residents.
  4. Implement evidence-based best practice policies and environmental changes to increase access to healthy eating and physical activity opportunities.
  5. Develop partnerships with non-traditional partners such as planning and zoning, transportation, worksites, local businesses and others to improve health through improvements in schools, worksites, community organizations and the built environment.
