Expectations
Interns are expected to follow conditions of employment at CDHD and meet expectations placed on them during the orientation, where the intern and supervisor will develop a work plan. This work plan will include the project description and expectations, hours on project, and a timeline to meet established benchmarks of the project(s).
Description of specialty areas
Assessments
- Interns working on assessments will collect both raw and analyzed data for various purposes. Interns may work on community assessment projects and/or community health profiles. These activities require strong computer, analytical, and writing skills. Interns must be familiar with the assessment concepts and possess the ability to present data in a format that is easily comprehended by the public.
Biostatistics
- Those interested in pursuing a career in biostatistics will be given the opportunity to analyze raw data, including surveillance, reportable disease, and outbreak datasets. This position requires the intern to have knowledge, skill, and ability in the use of Excel and/or EpiInfo to apply various statistical tests. The ability to effectively interpret and present these results is highly desirable.
Community education, web site development, and marketing
- Community education, web site development, and marketing may include development of pamphlets and other educational materials. Interns may be tasked with updating or expanding current web pages on the CDHD web site. These activities will require close work with Communicable Disease Control program staff and the Public Information Office.
Epidemiology
- Those working in epidemiology will assist with day-to-day epidemiologic investigations, outbreaks, active surveillance, and simple data analysis (e.g., attack rate, odds ratio, etc.). Interns will work with confidential information. Strong communication skills are highly recommended as well as familiarity with medical terminology and germ theory of disease.
Management
- Interns interested in management will work closely with the program manager. Attending meetings, contract management, employee evaluation, program development and evaluation, and training plans are just some of the skills covered. Only graduate students are eligible for this position and must possess a strong desire to work in public health leadership.
Research assistant
- Research assistants will provide support for on-going research projects. Research may be related to infectious disease epidemiology or community assessments. These projects may provide opportunities for publication and recognition in the public health community. Graduate students are preferred for this position and students must exhibit strong analytical and writing skills.
Workforce Development
- Interns interested in workforce development should expect to work on public health core competency training plans, including the identification, development, and implementation of appropriate training. Interns may also be asked to assist with program evaluation and policy development. Interns should possess strong writing and interpersonal communication skills.
